The FAA saw a need to train general airworthiness maintenance inspectors on mechanic examiner functions and decided to create two courses in order to fill that need: a Web-based training (WBT) and a Practical Application Workshop (PAW). The WBT, which we have chosen to feature here, acts as a prerequisite to the PAW. The WBT is a two-hour course designed to provide Flight Standards Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASIs) with the knowledge and skills of the Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). This highly interactive course features an introduction to FAA guidance, an overview of the oversight process, a discussion of high risk DME activities, information on pretest activities that should be conducted, a discussion about the elements of a compliant test/project, and an overview of appropriate posttest activities. These lessons include such interactive features as narration, animation, videos, slideshows, and knowledge checks.
